Privacy Policy

Effective June 1, 2026 · Last updated June 1, 2026

Gemspot is a free community treasure hunt. You find QR stickers placed at local businesses, scan them, solve a riddle, and climb a leaderboard. This policy explains what the Gemspot app collects, why, and what control you have — with a focus on the three things the app may ask permission to use: your camera, your location, and your account information.

This policy applies to the Gemspot mobile app and to www.gemspot.app. In this policy, "Gemspot," "we," "us," and "our" refer to Gemspot, Inc., the operator of Gemspot.

Camera

Used to scan QR codes.

The app uses your device camera for one purpose: to scan the QR sticker at a gem location so we can confirm you found it and show the riddle.

We do not take, store, upload, or transmit photos or video. The camera reads the QR code on your device, and only the resulting code value is used. You can decline camera access and still browse the map, though you won't be able to scan stickers.

Location

Used to find gems near you.

If you allow it, the app uses your device location to center the gem map on where you are, show how far gems are, and help you navigate to them. When you tap to get directions, we may hand off to your device's maps app, which has its own privacy practices.

We use location only while you are using the app. We do not track your location in the background, and we do not build a history of where you go. You can decline location access and still use Gemspot by browsing gems and entering destinations manually.

Account data

Used to run your profile & leaderboard

When you create a Gemspot account, we collect and store:

  • Your email address and a secure account identifier, used to sign you in and keep your account secure.

  • Your player name and home town, which you provide.

  • Your gameplay activity — the gems you've found, your counts and streaks, and how long it took you to solve each one.

What's visible to others: Gemspot has public leaderboards. Your player name and home town may be shown to other players alongside your ranking and completion times. Please don't use a player name you'd rather keep private. Your email address is never shown to other players.

How we use your information

We use the information above to operate the game: to sign you in, save your progress, confirm finds, rank players on leaderboards, and improve how the app works. We may use your email to send you account or service messages. We do not sell your personal information.

Service providers we rely on

Gemspot is built on third-party services that process data on our behalf so the app can function:

  • Google Firebase (authentication, database, hosting) stores your account and gameplay data. See Google's Firebase privacy and security and Google Privacy Policy.

  • Map and directions providers render the map and provide navigation when you request it.

  • Apple App Store / Google Play distribute the app and handle their own analytics and account systems under their own policies.

These providers may process data on servers outside your state or country. We share only what each provider needs to perform its function.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account and gameplay data for as long as your account is active. All-time leaderboard records may be retained to preserve the integrity of the game's history. When you delete your account, we remove your personal information as described below.

Deleting your account and data

You can delete your Gemspot account at any time. Within the app, go to your account settings and choose to delete your account, which removes your profile and personal information. You can also email us at the address below to request deletion, and we will process it.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, and to ask how it is used. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below and we'll respond as required by applicable law.

Children's privacy

Gemspot is a family-friendly community game, but accounts and personal information are intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures, including the security features of Google Firebase, to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Gemspot evolves. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date above and post the revised policy at this same address. Significant changes may also be communicated in the app.
